"Developing capacities of Village Women"

Meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia

The series of Georgian meetings with the participation of Armenian and Georgian youth within the "Mimino project" is over. Armenian youth have already returned to Armenia. On the last day of the meetings the youth were hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia. Representatives of the Ministry spoke with the youth about the Armenian-Georgian relations, the problems existing in the region, the conflict, the process of European integration.

Meeting at the Public Defender Office of Georgia

In the framework of the “Mimino” project, Armenian and Georgian youth met with representatives of the Gender Equality Department of the Public Defender Office of Georgia. They spoke about their work, touched upon the problems existing in the country.

"Mimino" in Tbilisi- day 3

In the framework of the “Mimino” project Armenian and Georgian youth continue to have the series of meetings in Georgia. Today, the youth visited Ergneti's "Museum of War" where Lia Chlachidze presented the story of founding the museum. Later we visited one of Gori's local radio stations -“The Mosaic”. The Mosaic's director and one of the journalists, respectively, Gvantsa Doluashvili and Nino Chibchiuri, introduced the youth how they work and the issues they are addressing. At the end of the day, the project participants visited Tserovani IDP settlement. At Tserovani, the youth was hosted by the representative of "Tserovani Youth House", Nana Chkareuli, who presented the work of their organization as well as she talked about their community.

"Mimino" in Tbilisi- day 2

Today in the framework of Mimino project, the Armenian and Georgian youth met with an expert, historian Davit Jishkhariani, who analyzed the history of conflicts in the Caucasus. The youth also had a meeting with the representatives of “Lazarus Foundation” and “Center for Peace and Society Development”, respectively, they met with Nini Kobakhidze and Rodan Jomaya. They spoke about peacebuilding projects involving youth in the South Caucasus. In the second part of the day, the youth visited Tbilisi "Techpark and Innovative Center" where they got acquainted with the activities and programs of the Center.

"Mimino" in Tbilisi

The second part of the "Mimino" program launched by Democracy Today NGO has started. Within the framework of the project more than 10 young people from Armenia left for Tbilisi to participate in a number of meetings with Georgian youth. Armenian and Georgian youth participating in the program met with Dominik Cagara, executive director of OC Media in Tbilisi. The latter presented the work of "OC Media". During the meeting the work of mass media in the region was discussed.

Publication of the report of the G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council

The G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council releases today its Recommendations for advancing Gender Equality and the empowerment of girls and women and Call to Action.

The Advisory Council has identified 79 good practices in gender equality laws in 4 sectors (violence, economic empowerment, education and health, discrimination) and in all regions of the world.

Strengthening the capacities of rural women

Democracy Today NGO held a two-day seminar for representatives of the "Nalbandian Village Women's Club" within the framework of "Strengthening the capacities of rural women". The topic of the seminar was the management of NGOs. During the training we discussed strategies, missions, legislative requirements, needs assessment, resource management, budgeting of NGOs, SWOT analysis, NGO brand development and many other issues.

There is a need to take stock of current global developments in the field of disarmament, reflect on the successful strategies that have been pursued and identify additional entry points to advance disarmament through international law. Louise Arimatsu and Keina Yoshida look at what a feminist approach to disarmament would look like, and how international law can be more effectively harnessed to further disarmament goals and peace, with commentary from the recent Women, Peace and Security (LSE) and Graduate Institute in Geneva co-hosted workshop.

33 YEARS AGO

Safety measures were top of the mind for the Cambridge Peace Commission delegation enthralled into the next phase of establishing “sister city” relations with Yerevan, Armenia. After a few days of meetings, we had Moscow’s blessing. We were off to Armenia — coincidentally the first nation to have accepted Christianity in 301 A.D.

Mimino project- press conference (video)

The first part of the "Mimino" project finished. Project "Mimino" or "Caucasus is our one and common home" aims at developing new platform for confidence building and coexistence and will invest in lasting cooperation between Georgia and Armenia. 20 students from Armenia and Georgia participate in the project. Meeting with MPs

The Armenian and Georgian students also met with MPs - Sona Ghazaryan (member of the RA NA Standing Committee on European Integration) and Sargis Khandanyan (member of the RA NA Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs). Students met with the MPs in the framework of the "Mimino" Project. They talked to the youth about their work and touched upon the challenges. The MPs also answered the questions of the students.

Meeting in Yerevan

In the framework of the "Mimino" project, today the Armenian and Georgian students met with the Executive Director of Political Science Association of Armenia, Beniamin Poghosyan. They discussed the safety of Caucasus and the issues regarding safety.

Meeting in Yerevan and Vanadzor

The participants of the "Mimino" project met with a publicist and filmmaker Tigran Paskevichyan who talked about the present and past events of Armenia and Georgia. In the second half of the day, the participants left for Vanadzor. In Vanadzor they met with the representatives of Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor office.  You can see the article here.

Meeting with media representatives

The Armenian and Georgian students, who participate in Mimino Project, continue to have meetings with representatives of different organizations. Today, Boris Navasardyan, the president of the Yerevan Press Club talked to the youth about the press and answered the questions of the youth. In the second part of the day, the youth left for Gyumri where they visited "Gala" TV company and got acquainted with their work.  You can see the article here.

Meeting with "Restart"

In the frames of "Mimino" project, Armenian and Georgian students have been hosted by the members of "Restart" student-civil initiative. During the meeting the members of "Restart" introduced their projects as well as the initiatives targeting to develop education in Armenia. They discussed issues about higher education. They also talked about the possible projects that can be mutually initiated

Meeting with Human Rights Defender

The RA Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan and his representatives hosted Armenian and Georgian students at the Office of Human Rights Defender of RA. The students participates in "Mimino" project organized by Democracy Today NGO. During the meeting, the participants got to know the Human Rights Defender's work. They also discussed rights of women, children and national minorities. The project is supported by Fund for Local cooperation of MFA of Finland.

"Mimino" or "Caucasus is our one and common home" project

 Project "Mimino" or "Caucasus is our one and common home" aims at developing new platform for confidence building and coexistence and will invest in lasting cooperation between Georgia and Armenia. 20 young political scientists and journalists from Armenia and Georgia would make exchange visits to each other's country, traveling through regions, meeting and discussing with different groups of societies and sharing their experience though various creative means: writing articles and papers, organizing discussions, posts in social media and contributing to established by them on-line open discussion blog. will also be the beginning of a new on-line joint journal, which will work as platform for continuous cooperation to share the ideas on the interested topics and inviting more participants to the project The overall goal of the project is to build up confidence and lastin relationship between Georgian and Armenian youth and societies they live in. lt will be achieved through set of interrelated activities geared at better understanding the realities the youth in both societies lives in, common interests and values on such imporlant issues as democracy, rule of law peace building, and youth leadership. Cooperation on the themes and the other presented by youth will invest in enhancing their specific roles in building mutual understanding around the issues common for both states and strengthen coexistence between Georgia and Armenia.

WORKING GROUP ON WOMEN & GENDER REALITIES IN THE CIVIC SOLIDARITY PLATFORM OF OSCE

Who we are:
The Working Group on Women &Gender realities in the Civic Solidarity Platform of OSCE (http://www.civicsolidarity.org/member/1451/working-group-women-and-gender-realities-osce-region) discusses since its foundation in 2015 how mechanism of justice and meaningful women’s involvement in (peace) negotiations have been influential, what the main hampering factors were, and on how successful processes can be replicated, adapted and transferred to different countries and regions.

Representative of civil society organisations from different countries at the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenian.

On June 15, a number of women, who have been invited by Democracy Today NGO, had a meeting in the National Assembly of RA. The goal was to give an opportunity to the Armenian PMs, civil societies of different countries as well as regional civil societies to share their thoughts regarding global problems.

"Democracy Today" NGO held “Women at Peace Table – More Justice for All” the 7 th International Conference. The conference was attanded by human rights defenders from different countries, representatives of foreign embassies and consulates that are accredited in the Republic of Armenia as well as civil society representatives from different countries.

The International Young Women’s Peace and Human Rights Award

“The International Young Women’s Peace and Human Rights Award” 8th ceremony has already taken place. The award is named after Armenian peace builder and human rights activist Anahit Bayandur. The goal of the movement is to make women's role in peace processes visible, as well as, to recognize and bring voices of female actors to the table of peace negotiations. This year the award was given to Shirin El Jurdi (Lebanon) “for exceptional dedication and work to conflict prevention and protection of human rights”, Muna Luqman (Yemen) “for outstanding work in raising women’s visibility in peace building and gender responsive policy” and Malika Abubakarova (RF, Chechnya) for the recognition of her "outstanding work in protection of rights of women and children, as well as, investing in justice”. During the award ceremony, special diplomas have also been awarded. Eka Horstka received a special diploma “for outstanding and dedication work in building inclusive and resilient communities”. “Mission Armenia” received a special diploma “for providing human security to refuge and vulnerable communities”.   You can see the article here.

"New Skills for New Youth" project is ended

"New Skills for New Youth" project is ended. The project was taken placed by “Democracy Today” NGO. "New Skills for New Youth" project has become possible with the support of AMCOR Armenia foundation. It had participants from Tavush, Lori, Ararat, Armavir and Shirak marzes. During the first day of the training the Head of “Democracy Today” Gulnara Shahinan trained the participants about leadership amd how to be a successful leader. During the second day Hasmik Edilyan, a representative of “Democracy today” NGO, trained our youth about trafficking, how to be vigilant in the labor market and methods of avoiding from being abused.  You can see the article here.

"New skills for new youth" project with UMCOR Armenia 4

Democracy Today NGo with the support of AMCOR Armenia charity foundation continues the "New skills for new youth" project. The two-day training is already completed. Youth from Tavush, Lori, Ararat, Armavir and Shirak marzes participated in the seminar. During the first day of the training we hosted Samvel Martirosyan who is a media expert. He presented the opportunities of having online jobs. During the second day we hosted Gohar Sokhikyan who is from Employment Agency. She introduced the role and the function of state employment agency in details. She also introduced the projects that the agency carries out as well as paths to find jobs.  You can see the article here.

Seminar for youth 

Democracy Today NGO conducted a two-day seminar in the frame of two projects ("Young Women for Peace and Gender Equality" and EPNK ). With the financial support of Kvinna till Kvinna, youth from Voskepar, Berdavan and Ditak communities took part in the seminar called "Young Women for Peace and Gender Equality". During the training national action plan of UN 1325 resolution has been discussed. The trainee elaborated on what impact it can have on the youth from bordering communities and how it can contribute to the women's involvement in peace building. «Democracy Today» NGO continues the "New skills for new youth" project. This project takes place with the supports of AMCOR Armenia foundation. The second part of "Methodologies of applying for work" training has already taken place. It had participants from Tavush, Lori, Ararat, Armavir and Shirak marzes. During this training professionals from different fields shared their knowledge with the participants. Due to this meeting the youth had the opportunity to get to know how different organizations work and learned about the methodologies they use. You can see the article here.

 "New skills for new youth" project with UMCOR Armenia

«Democracy Today» NGO continues the "New skills for new youth" project project. project. This project takes place with the supports of AMCOR Armenia foundation. The second part of training has already taken place. It had participants from Tavush, Lori, Ararat, Armavir and Shirak marzes. During the first day of the training our youth learned skills of CV writing and presented it to their employers. We also discussed the samples of CVs and motivation letters which our youth had written. We elaborated on the strong and weak sides of them. The topic of the second day of the training was synergy, teamwork secrets, features and advantages. The participants had a groupwork activity. "Methodologies of applying for work" with UMCOR Armenia

Democracy Today NGO with the support of UMCOR Armenia charity foundation has re-started "New skills for new youth" project project. The training is going to take place within 5 months and each month a two-day seminar will be conducted. 37 people from Tavush, Lori, Ararat, Armavir and Shirak marzes will take part in the training. You can see the article here.

Invitation for a Training Course

Many young people are facing numerous obstacles while applying for jobs for the first time, because of lack of knowledge in the HR filed.
Due to this, "Democracy Today" NGO with the support of UMCOR Armenia foundation is continuing program during which the methodologies of applying for work will be taught together with many other related issues.

Those young people who want take part in this program please fill the application form and send it to organizers by February 10th, 2019.
The project is designed for young people from Tavush, Armavir, Ararat and Lori provinces of Armenia.

Meeting with the representative of Ministry of Defens

A number of youngsters from the borderline communities of Tavush wished to have a meeting-discussion with the representatives of Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia. Training on economic empowerment of young women

Democracy Today NGO in the scope of EPNK project has completed the special training on economic empowerment of young women from borderline villages. The participants of the training were young women from remote communities of Tavush. During three two-days seminars women learned about how to write an effective CVs and motivation letters, how to prepare for job interview, etc. Special attention has also been paid to team building activities., how to prepare for job interview, etc.

The aim of the project was to inform the women how to skillfully apply for a job in order to become competitive in the market

Methodologies of applying for work

Democracy Today NGO has completed "New skills for new youth" project which has been supported by UMCOR foundation. During three two-day seminar project participants learned how to write an effective CVs, motivation letters of personal statement. Youth had chance to carry out some hands-on activities by group tasks and homework. Democracy Today NGO with 'UMCOR Armenia foundation are going to continuing the set of seminars targeting to teach youth the skills of applying for a job. This time young representatives from Jrashen, Gargar (Lori), Koghb, Movses (Tavush), Nalbandyan, Haykavan (Armavir) communities took part in the project.

Women Rebel against War

Gulnara Shahinian, the head of Democracy Today NGO, has been awarded with Women Rebel against War prize after Anita Augspurg. Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) has founded the award in cooperation with the town halls of Verden and Hamburg cities. Luts Brockmann, the city Mayor of Verden, has given the award to Gulnara Shahinian.

Autumn school 2018

Democracy Today NGO held its autumn school in Aghveran. Youth from Movses, Chinchin, Voskepar, Koghb, Berdavan, Gargar, Aregnadem, Jrashen, Sipanik, Nalbandyan communities as well as youth from Yezidi community participated in the autumn school program. About 50 young people attended the school.

Developing capacities of rural women

Democracy Today NGO has been holding "Developing capacities of Village Women" project in Armavir marz for a few years. In the scope of the project women are given the opportunity to undergo medical check. The aim is to prevent breast cancer. After undergoing medical check in their communities, those women who had the need to be examined more thoroughly to prevent breast cancer have visited Yerevan`s Mother and Child Scientific Center. The groups of women have undergone special medical examinations for five times. Not only women from Nalbandyan village but also women from nearby villages and Yezidi community have taken part in the medical examinations. 

Seminar-meeting with the youth

Democracy Today NGO conducted a seminar with the representatives of the bordering communities of Armenia as well as with the representatives of Yezidi community. In the first phase of the seminar we discussed the role of women in peacebuilding as well as the difficulties that they face while illustrating those processes. We discussed raising the role of women peacebuilders and having their voice heard in negotiation processes. During the second phase we discussed the small grant projects that the youth representatives had presented. Small grants will be provided soon.

Seminar with the youth

Democracy Today NGO held another seminar with the youth. During the first part of the seminar the representative of EVN report website Rubina Margosian elaborated on the role of "Velvet Revolution" in Armenia. During teh second part of the meeting there was a discussion on the small projects. Youth from Berd, Chinchin, Movses and Voskepar communities had written small projects which we discussed during the meeting. The projects will be changed a little and will be finalized. We also discussed mini grant projects which will be given to youth centers of Araks, Berd and Voskepar. The youth centers were founded in the scope of Kvinna Till Kvinna`s projects. The grants will be used for community development and projects. We discussed the format and the content of those projects

"International Young Women's Peace Award" ceremony took place

The "International Young Women's Peace Award" ceremony organized by “Democracy Today” NGO took place. Human rights activist Khin Omar (Burma) photo-journalist Adriane Ohanesyan (US) and human rights activist Maine Balman (Cyprus) were awarded for their exceptional work in the field of peace and human rights.

The winners were nominated by famous international organizations. During the event the special diplomas have also been awarded. Catherine Herzog (Belgium) received a special diploma "For outstanding work in the field of peace and human rights education". Journalist Taus Serganiova (Chechnya) also received a diploma “for human rights and peace journalism”. And the final special diploma was awarded to the EVN Report (Armenia), who as “women journalists have contributed to democracy and human rights”.

DT's Youth in "Velvet revolution"

Nowadays, Armenia is at the centre of worldwide attention. 

The beneficiaries of "Democracy Today" NGO have not missed this struggle and were actively involved in the acts of civil disobedience. Moreover, the special role in this fight played women by taking part in the protests and numerous civil activities.

Armenia has new prime minister

Armenia has a new prime minister. Nikol Pashinyan, the leader of the "Velvet revolution" and the representative of people of Armenia was elected as a result of the voting in the National Assembly.

The newly elected Prime Minister joined the people at the Republic square to celebrate the victory together.

"Velvet revolution" in Armenia

On May 1st, the National Assembly of Armenia did not vote for Nikol Pashinyan as Prime Minister.

The hundred thousands of people were disappointed. 
The next day the numerous acts of civil disobedience and the constant protests collapsed not only the Yerevan, but the whole country.

Democracy Today NGO has conducted a two-day seminar.

Youth from Berdavan, Voskepar, Berd, Chinchin, Voskevan, and Movses villages, representatives of Sinjar Yezidi National Union as well as 'Women's Club of Nalbandyan Village' participated in the lecture. During the first day human rights defender and politician Artak Zeynalyan talked about basic human rights. Armenia's membership in international bodies and the role of youth in the society have also been in the highlight. During the second part of the seminar Tigran Paskevichyan, who had earlier conducted a seminar on how to shoot a film about women's role in peacebuilding, deliberated logistical issues with the youth that they were interested in. Film shootings are still in process. During the second day of the seminar Gulnara Shahinian discussed the project of RA. 

"The Key Points of the Right to Health of RA Army" research and video clip presentation

Serving your country is an honor, responsible and a right. Democracy Today NGO presented "The Key Points of the Right to Health of RA Army" research in the scope of "Protected Life and Health of Military Personnel" project.  In the research you can find the norms of the right to health of the military servicemen, the problems related to those rights and the results of focus group discussions, individual interviews and the results of quantitative research. During the event a video about the basic points of the right to health of mandatory military servicemen was introduced. The video will be broadcast by the TV companies of 8 marzes starting from September. The project is being financed by the Norwegian Helsinki Committee.

We urge the Government of Hong Kong to meet the demands for democratic governance of Hong Kong people and respect their rights to defend the universal values of human rights and democracy, which are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 
 
We denounce the escalation of police brutality and arbitrary use of force against peaceful protesters, reporters, first-aiders, and ordinary citizens of Hong Kong. We believe it is in China’s interest to show the global community it is not an enemy of open society and democracy.
